We Think About the Environment

Large-scale food by-products are generated in Korea which cause continuous environmental pollution, but there are no effective solutions currently. In particular, the production of beer and “sikhye” (Korean sweet rice beverage) generate 420,000 tons of by-products annually in Korea. By-products are continuously increasing, and most of them are used as low-value-added products (compost, animal feed, etc.) or disposed of after paying environmental fees. The current F&B structure, which leads to mass production and disposal, is causing serious environmental damage and opportunity costs. RE:nergy flour is created to solve these industrial structure issues.

Closing the loop in the F&B industry by upcycling food by-products

RE:nergy Flour

RE:nergy flour is re-harvested from malt used to make beer and “sikhye” (Korean sweet rice beverage) and is recreated into food ingredients through food upcycling.

It has a high concentration of all-natural fiber and protein, low sugar and carbohydrates (compared to barley powder), and other abundant nutrients. RE:nergy flour also has properties similar to wheat flour so that it can fully substitute flour to create various products such as pastry, pizza, and chips.

How is
RE:nergy Flour Made?

Beer and Sikhye are made using barley (malt) as the main ingredient. RE:harvest collects barley by-products produced after making beer and “sikhye” on the same day, and makes RE:nergy flour by using the patented process of “Sterilization-Drying-Milling”.

The Value of RE:nergy Flour

Food waste is one of the biggest issues worldwide, and various international organizations are looking for sustainable solutions through various means like upcycling By enabling sustainable production and consumption through the food upcycling, RE:nergy flour directly contributes to reducing carbon emissions, food waste and water consumption. The production of RE:nergy flour helps to reduce not only resources that go into making flour but also by-products that are disposed or go into landfills. 1kg of RE:nergy flour is equivalent to a 11kg reduction in carbon emission and a 3.7 ton reduction in water.

Sprout of Love Project

The “Sprout of Love Project” is a platform that can provide sustainable job opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. Workers with developmental disabilities at Anyang City Sheltered Workshop inspect finished products and add a “Sprout of Love” sticker on our packaging after stage 1 of inspection. Through the project, we maintain our brand philosophy of contributing to the virtuous cycle of the economy by helping the socially vulnerable to become valuable members of society.
